In the past week, soon after the U.S. observed the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a violent mob assaulted the American Embassy in Cairo protesting an American-made film that mocks Islam, ripping down the American flag and attempting to raise an al Qaeda flag in its place. About the same time, an organized attack was carried out on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya resulting in the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Protests are also being held at the U.S. Embassies in Tunisia and Sudan, and Australia. Add to that the developments in Somalia, where a new president was elected and an assassination has already been attempted.

Suddenly, the world is burning.

Recently, I posted an article about the fall of the Roman Empire and how it relates to what is happening in our own country. Given what has transpired in the past week I thought it is important to revisit some eerie similarities between the fall of the Roman Empire and the world in which we live in today:

Rome – Disagreement was a major point of contention between the Senate and the Roman Emperor. The Roman Emperor had the legal power to rule Rome’s religious, civil and military affairs with the Senate acting as an advisory body. But the powerful and wealthy inevitably became corrupt and many lived a debauched, deluded and immoral lifestyle. The Roman Empire saw many examples of antagonism between the Senators and the Emperors. Either the Senators didn’t like the Emperor or the Emperors were at odds with the Senators.

U.S. – Antagonism between the U.S. president and congress and /or senate is nothing new. But it seems to have become more volatile over the past few elections. Democrats refuse to accept Republican ideas, and vice-verse. Meanwhile Democrats and Republicans argue about everything from unemployment, to the global economy, to the Federal Budget, to Healthcare Reform and blame each other for the failures.

Rome – One of the main causes for the fall of the Roman Empire was the decline in morals and political corruption. Immoral and promiscuous sexual behavior had a devastating impact on the Romans. The decline in morals also affected the lower classes and slaves. Many participated in religious festivals where sacrifices, lewd acts and sexual promiscuity were practiced. Brothels and forced prostitution flourished. The power of the Praetorian Guard, the elite soldiers who made up the bodyguard of the emperor, (Much like the President’s Secret Service) led to political corruption and grew to such an extent that this massive group of soldiers decided on whether an emperor should be disposed of and who should become the new emperor.

U.S. – According to a Gallop report 75% of Americans say that the country’s moral values are worsening, blaming a decline on ethical standards, poor parenting, and dishonesty by government and business leaders. Other reasons Americans mentioned were a rise in crime, a breakdown of the two-parent family and a moving away from religion or God.

A U.S. Justice Department source has told The Daily Caller that at least two DOJ prosecutors accepted cash bribes from allegedly corrupt finance executives who were indicted under court seal within the past 13 months, but never arrested or prosecuted. The sitting governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, his attorney general and an unspecified number of Virgin Islands legislators also accepted bribes, the source said, adding that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is aware prosecutors and elected officials were bribed and otherwise compromised, but has not held anyone accountable.

The men and women of the Secret Service are supposed to be the best of the best. Instead, they have become a national embarrassment. 11 members of the U.S. Secret Service were investigated for consorting with prostitutes in Colombia. In the international community, most prostitutes do not volunteer themselves into prostitution. They are most often kidnapped or abused as children. If they survive the abuse, torture, rape and beatings, they are often forced into drug addiction as well. Once United States personnel are involved in prostitution in a foreign country, they have become part of the problem of sex trafficking, sex slavery and kidnapping by being facilitators.

Rome – Another one of the main causes for the fall of the Roman Empire was the fast expansion of the Empire. The rapid growth in the lands conquered by the Empire led to the need to defend the borders and territories of Rome. The people of the conquered lands, (most of who were referred to as Barbarians) hated the Romans. Taxes on the non-Romans were high and constantly increased and led to frequent rebellions. The constant warfare required heavy military spending and the Roman army became over-stretched and needed more and more soldiers. The ‘barbarians’, who had been conquered, and other foreign mercenaries were allowed to join the Roman army. The knowledge that the barbarians gained of Roman style warfare and military tactics by being trained while serving in the Roman army were eventually turned against the Empire and led to the sack of Rome by the Visigoths led by an ex-army soldier, Alaric.

U.S. – Lands conquered by the United States could be described as an aggressive encroachment of one people upon the territory of another, resulting in the subjugation of that people to alien rule dating back to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The U.S. policies towards the Native Americans were designed to remold them into a people more appropriately conformed to the imperial desires of the Federal Government.

There have been conflicting reports made by U.S. government officials as to how many military bases actually exist outside the country. Territories such as Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico remain under U.S. control. Most of them still have U.S. bases within their territories. As of 2003, the United States had bases in over 36 countries worldwide.

The United States has trained hundreds of Arab Fatah militia members who were part of the elite Presidential Guard, a private army that was envisioned as protecting Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas from a Hamas coup. However, the Americans suffered an embarrassing defeat when Hamas overran Fatah forces in Gaza. A training manual distributed by American Secret Service officers, with the logo of the Counterterrorism Training Group and the U.S. government seal, was a teaching manual for Al-Ashi and other former Fatah terrorists who switched to Hamas.

Rome – The Roman Government was constantly threatened by bankruptcy due to the cost of defending the Empire. Cheap slave labor resulted in the unemployment of the Plebs (or working class) in Rome who became dependent on hand-outs from the state. The Romans attempted a policy of unrestricted trade but this led to the Plebs being unable to compete with foreign trade. The government was therefore forced to subsidize the working class Romans to make up the differences in prices. This resulted in thousands of Romans choosing just to live on subsidies, sacrificing their standard of living for an idle life of ease. The massive divide between the rich Romans and the poor Romans increased still further.

U.S. – The U.S. economy is nearing total system failure. Right now, many poverty statistics are higher than they have ever been since the Great Depression. One in five Americans, the highest in the nation’s history, relies on the federal government for everything from housing, health care, education, and food stamps. The federal government is going into unprecedented amounts of debt in order to try to maintain our current standard of living, but there is no way that they will be able to sustain this kind of borrowing for too much longer.

Today, we’ve replaced the Bible and prayer in our public schools with metal detectors and police security. We’ve given up the security of family values and replaced them with immoral ideas and attitudes. Our children have become uncontrollable beasts who murder without conscience. Sanctity of life is no longer fought for, and more often is legislated against. Pornography has been piped into our homes for our children to view at the push of a button on the remote control. Those who were designed and appointed to help us and be examples for us, from the local pastor on up to the President, have led us to the brink of destruction. I believe that America is at the precipice of a complete collapse. But I also believe that it will lead to a great spiritual awakening. Because I know that the only hope that we have will be in a collective repentance and turning back to God.

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  – 2 Chronicles 7:14 –
